The Small Northumberland Hotel That Took On The Big Boys – And Won! PDF Print E-mail

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant in Wark, near Hexham, has many a glittering award to its name but there’s something particularly satisfying about its latest accolade. Battlesteads has fought off competition from some of the biggest names on the London hotel scene to win ‘Green Hotel of the Year’ at the 2011 Hotel Cateys.

The jewel in the Northumbrian crown, Battlesteads found itself up against Lancaster London and The Savoy in London, as well as Strattons Hotel in Swaffham, Norfolk. The awards took place at Lancaster London and were hosted by comedian and actor Marcus Brigstocke.

The Hotel Cateys were created to recognise and applaud the people and teams that deliver the many demands of guests, day in, day out – those unsung heroes who work tirelessly to support the UK's hotel sector.

Judges commended Battlesteads by saying: “There appears to be a boundless enthusiasm for innovation and drive to succeed both environmentally and commercially which set Battlesteads apart from its competition to win the Green Hotel category.

“Battlesteads is a shining example of what can be achieved with a little effort; sustainability is clearly at the heart of the operation and the hotel sector should take note of what has been achieved and challenge themselves to achieve the same.”

Battlesteads owners Richard and Dee Slade, office manager Katie Meyrick and head gardener Kate Slade attended the gala awards dinner and were surprised and delighted that Battlesteads was declared the winner in the Green Hotel of the Year category.

Notes for editors

Richard and Dee Slade bought Battlesteads in 2005 and were driven to investigate sustainable solutions as a result of rural energy supply issues. They soon got the ‘green’ bug and have made huge advancements over the years, to the point that they’re now leading the field for sustainable tourism across the North of England.

Battlesteads has won countless awards for its top hospitality, superb food and outstanding green credentials. These include Best Green Pub and Great British Pub of the Year in 2010, Considerate Hotel of the Year 2010/11 and Silver in the EnjoyEngland Awards for Excellence 2011.

The Cateys and Hotel Catey Awards are part of the Caterer and Hotelkeeper Group, owned by Reed Business Information (RBI), a division of Reed Elsevier.
